second day of lunar new year

on the second day of the lunar new year, stanza made an excursion to guangzhou, south of china, the Shangxiajiu-Dishipu pedestrian area was crowded with tourists and guangzhou residents. the whole area are full of old brand names of shops and restaurants. Enjoying a cup of tea with some good food is part of guangzhou life which is quite the mentality of hong kong people in their leisure...

The Hong Kong's Peak Tram is a century old furnicular railway and its first public transport which began operation in 1888.

it began its career a century ago by coal fired steam boilers, to serve the priviledged city commuters (governors, wealthy "hongs"...), who were pioneering residents at the peak to retreat from the city's sweltering summers, that was before the age of air conditioning and refrigeration...and in those leisurely days, commuters were otherwise carried by sedan chairs or rode in horseback...

...old tram car est 1959, parked at tram station at MacDonnell Road
reDSC_0001peaktram.JPG

nowadays it becomes a tourist attraction displaying, as it ascends or descends in the tilting route, panoramic view of the central skyscrapers and the spectacular "postcard" view of Victoria Harbour. In fact, the central banking chaps with their quarters at the peak are often these tram commuters when they miss their bank shuttles.

...current model tram car since 1989
reDSC_0005peaktramm.jpg

It maintains the original track with two ropes of a nominal same diameter of 44mm with a breaking strength of 139 tonnes. The emergency rail clamp brakes on the tramcars are capable of stopping a fully loaded tramcar at the steepest part of the track. The Peak Tram, a double reversable funicular railway follows the Swiss Drive System. Passengers pass four intermediate stations between the two terminals - Barker Road, May Road, MacDonnell Road, and Kennedy Road.

The 23rd day of the 12th month in a year on the lunar calendar is called "off year", (Xiaonian in Chinese). It is the day on which the folk people offer sacrifices to Kitchen God.
It is said that on the 23rd day of the 12th month every lunar year, Kitchen God would go to the Heaven to report the good and evils of the family to the Jade Emperor (The Supreme Deity of Taoism) for the Jade Emperor to give his rewards and punishments. Giving Kitchen God a send-off, people offer sweets, pure water, soybeans and grass fodder and put them on the desk before the Kitchen God Idol down to the earth. It is said the water and fodder is prepared for the god's horse while going up to the celestial palace. When offering sacrifices to the god, people would melt Guangdong sugar by fine and apply it on the god's mouth so that he can't speak ill of the people in front of the Jade Emperor. According to the folk custom, "men do not worship the Moon while women do not offer sacrifices to Kitchen god." So sacrifices to Kitchen god is confined to men.

Besides, on New Year's Eve (the last evening of the lunar year), Kitchen god and various other gods will come down to the earth to spend the New Year's Day in the human world. So on New Year's Eve there is a ceremony to usher in Kitchen God and other god. After burning the paper sedan-chairs and paper horses and sprinkling three cups of liquor, people give the gods a send-off. Then it is the turn for every family to offer their memorial sacrifices to their ancestors.

magnoliaceae 木蘭 ~This plant family comprising about 220 species in 13 genera is distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical Asia and America with a few in temperate region. Members of the Magnoliaceae are mostly evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs. Apical buds are large and covered by stipule. Simple leaves with entire margin are in alternate arrangement. Flowers are large, solitary and usually bisexual. Fruits are follicles which will split to release the seeds when mature.

Magnolia is the "type" genus of this family. This garden grows 5 species including Chinese Magnolia (Magnolia coco), Yulan (Magnolia denudata), Purple Magnolia (Magnolia liliiflora), Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia soulangeana) and Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora). The last one is an evergreen species originated from North America. They flower between spring and early summer.

Besides, members of the genus Michelia are closely related to the Magnolias and are commonly seen in Hong Kong. They include White Jade Orchid Tree (Michelia x alba), Champac (Michelia champaca) and Banana Shrub (Michelia figo). They mainly flower in summer.

Many species of this family are popular garden trees with high ornamental values. (information from hk zoological & botanical garden)

coco wore a 'timepiece' patterned dress (sugarmag), not unlike a clown

i've changed coco's eye chips to all shades of green at some point of time, in tribute to the african violet, emerald love, that fabulously raised from a wounded leaf given to me to a flourishing canopy that once bloomed each day in a year in my office in jardine house. since i moved to 1QRC where fake trees or shrubs were allocated like furniture acc to grades(!), it fell into a slumber forever...

au pavillon restaurant thailandais au bord du 'lac du cœur', parc de hk;

donc la conception sur place de son nom, nymphéa

sun, moon, star

amandine, discovered a curious district of the sun, moon and star streets, a trilogy situated at the outskirt of south wanchai next to admiralty

amandine dressed in earth colour, felt very grounded, before she set out for her sun, moon, star adventure

the mystery of the vanished saint-exupéry, leaving the saga of petit prince in this planet

oh la la, a 'traiteur' at one end of the star street

so starry the amazing CD wall sparkling up the storey of a building

the white phal orchids also twinkling on the roof of a florist in saint francis yard

a red cigar shop on star street ~ against an antique furniture shop on st francis street

florists in saint francis street

agnès b's hongkong office, on a road, very european ~ yucca in the lamplight

two neighbourhood restaurants

a chinese tea shop at star street ~ gigantic light wall of some asian statue, three pacific place

a number of furniture shops and interior design studios scattered in the area

the moon street is a one-block street of a few residential storeys, at street level are several food wholesale and garages

the sun street, also a one-block road parallel to moon street, which in turn is parallel to star street, where stone stairs lead down to the south side of queen's road east ~ at its dead end a restaurant called 'solstice', still an astrological allusion

down queen's road east are the array of curtain and bedlinen shops

bonne nuit >3<

amandine wore an almond-toffee coloured dress (sugarmag), caramel coloured boots (who's that girl)

sparrows are frequenters of the taipaitong at saint francis yard

guardian of the area

already a dreaming cat on a car of a restaurant goer in saint francis yard
